Day Three – Kinloch Hourn To Achnashellach: Trial By Kintail

Today the route carved its way through the majestic but unyielding mountains and glens of Kintail, rising and falling through rugged passes before descending to Shiel Bridge. From there, it’s long push for participants to Camp 3 at Achnashellach past the most voluminous and tallest waterfalls in the UK, the Falls of Glomach. Though shorter on the map than Day 6, this stage proved to be the hardest so far for many, with searing temperatures, steep climbs and technical descents combining into a true test of resilience.

Spirits are remaining high as runners return to Camp, with delicious Vegetable curry on the menu for dinner and copious amounts of chips, greens and pudding, they are fuelling back up, kicking back and swapping stories from what we’re sure will have been a memorable day out on the Cape Wrath trail.

Cape Wrath 100

Today also marked a special occasion as the finish point for our 100-mile Cape Wrather’s!

The inaugural edition of the Cape Wrath 100, covered the first 3 days of the Cape Wrath Ultra, for a multi-day ‘lite’ if you will. The same spectacular Scottish scenery and Camp life experience over 3 action-packed and testing days on the trail. Our winner’s came in convoy into Camp yesterday evening to a trophy presentation with a side of midge. The leading ladies Nicola Di Rollo and Donna Clark who ran the course together crossed the line first, Nicola insisting that Donna should receive the female winner’s trophy as they stopped for a photo under the gantry. They were shortly followed by our third female, Maree Jesson who exclaimed “That was the hardest medal I’ve ever earned in my life”. Maree was accompanied by our first and only male finisher, Simon Tootell, who was running the Cape Wrath 100 for his birthday!

For our Cape Wrath and Explorer participants, Day 4 awaits. The runners will cover a shorter distance of 22 miles tomorrow, but be warned the terrain around Torridon is remote, technical and pathless at times - however, with the sun still shining we expect the scenery to be outstanding - the participants will be experiencing this magical part of the world in it’s best light.

Race Update

Nicola Dawson and Emma McCahill continue to push the front of the women’s race, with Nicola still holding a 10 minute lead in first position. Sarah Ingram has had a super strong run today, despite it being dubbed as ‘the toughest day’, securing herself firmly in the running with third place, just over 10 minutes behind Emma.

The Day 3 men’s race continued on the same trend as earlier in the week, with Marcus Scotney taking a clear lead and coming across the line ahead of course record pace. The gap between Marcus and Jon Shields has grown, with Shields still holding a strong second place, arriving in Achnashellach around an hour later. Third place has been taken by Lewis Taylor, who led the Cape Wrath Ultra in 2024 until he unfortunately had to retire.
