Day Five – Kinlochewe To Inverbroom: A Remote Passage

After the rugged grandeur of Torridon on Day Four of the Cape Wrath Ultra®, runners awoke in Kinlochewe to face a new kind of challenge: the vast, uninhabited expanse of the Fisherfield Forest, often dubbed 'The Great Wilderness'. Today's 27 mile stage promised a journey deeper into isolation, with 1,400m of ascent through some of Scotland's most remote terrain. The route began with a steady climb, gradually unveiling the imposing silhouettes of the Fisherfield Munros. An Teallach rose in the distance, its craggy silhouette a constant companion through the wilderness.

As Day Five progressed, the weather remained mercifully clear, allowing for uninterrupted views of the surrounding peaks. With a light breeze, the air was cooler than previous days and the competitors were thankful for the ‘perfect running conditions’, accompanied by more runnable terrain. For many, after another day on sore feet, the final descent into Inverbroom was a welcome relief, leading to Day Five Camp nestled beside the River Broom.

Competitors marched forward with a sunny disposition today, claiming the ground was easier underfoot, a stark contrast to the rough gorse and heather from the previous day. Those on the Explorer had the option of a shorter day than usual, which seemed to be a welcome respite and taken by many. After a leisurely morning in a coffee shop on the scenic, coastal road around towards Ullapool, they began their day from Checkpoint Two, able to absorb the views on the stomp over to Inverbroom.

Camp Five is a cosy site, enabling a social atmosphere as runners rest their weary legs on the bean bags and on the banks of the River Broom, followed by a quick dip to reinvigorate! With cooler, wet weather set to roll in by the weekend, it’s clear they are making the most of this incredible sunny spell we’ve been blessed with on this year’s Cape Wrath. As runners bed down in their blue tents for an early night, thoughts are on tomorrow, the longest day on the Cape Wrath Ultra. At 45 miles, Day Six climbs up on some rough high ground but is preceded by significant distances on wide tracks through the glens.

Race Update

As we look towards the longest day on the Cape Wrath Ultra, Marcus Scotney continues to hold steady with his two hour lead on fellow competitor Jon Shields, with Lewis Taylor tailing in third. With the three men keeping a consistent pace, will this be our podium at the lighthouse?

In the women’s race, Sarah Ingram stormed around the more runnable Day 5 course, despite exclaiming it’s not her best terrain, taking the lead on Emma McCahill. The competition is mounting as the ladies overall times are just minutes apart. Gillian Lindsey completes the women’s podium in third for the second day running.
