Day Seven – Inchnadamph To Kinlochbervie: Knock-And-Lochan

The landscape is ever changeable on Day Seven as our runners traverse moorlands, mountains and around some of the most beautiful deep sea lochs Scotland has on offer. Glacial erosion in the area has created more substantial glens and larger hill lochs, with small rocky outcrops, fondly described as ‘knock-and-lochan’ topography. After a week of piercing blue skies and a fiery sun, the hot weather has parted ways to rolling low clouds, light rain showers and cooler temperatures, which the runners appeared to welcome with open arms.

The lighthouse may feel within touching distance for a lot of our Cape Wrather’s but another lengthy day, Day Seven shouldn’t be underestimated. With pathless sections, seaweed enthralled loch shores - watch out for the sea otters! - and a rare section of tarmac, it’s a long 38 miles to our Camp Seven site at Kinlochbervie. As fatigue is running high as feet and body start to unravel, it’s time to soak in the views and for our participants to remember why they started on this epic 400km journey.

Passing the 200m Eas a’ Chual Aluinn Waterfall - the highest in the UK - participants stopped for a quick photo before making haste to avoid any cut-offs on the final stage of their adventure. For those Ultra competitors who made it into Camp, thoughts are shifting to home life past the Cape Wrath bubble we’ve all been surrounded in for the past week. Tomorrow at 7am they will leave for the final leg of the journey, crossing beautiful Sandwood Bay North, to the iconic Cape Wrath lighthouse, completing a feat that only a few have ever achieved.

One more day to go - the Cape is calling!

Race Update

Marcus Scotney, who has led from the very start, came in at 39:54:16. While it looks like his own course record of 41:40:50 may remain untouched, what an impressive way to celebrate turning 50! Jon Shields, remained consistent, holding his position in second while Lewis Taylor had a strong day out on the Cape Wrath trail, flying in 30 minutes behind Jon to secure the third spot. With Seven long days of pushing starting to take its toll on all our runners, nothing is certain as we head into the final day.

The women’s podium remains constant as Sarah Ingram continues to move steadily ahead, building on her lead with another strong performance and setting herself up well going into the final day. Margarida Bagão finished in second place after another impressive run, Emma McCahill is holding her position in third, with a 30 minute lead on our fourth women.
