The myth: You need to be an expert at navigation

Debunked:

You definitely don’t need to be a whizz with a map and compass to do the Cape Wrath Ultra®. We provide free GPX files for participants to download to their device. If you’ve never done any navigation whatsoever, we recommend practising following a GPS track and getting comfortable with some basic map reading.

However, you don’t need to be able to do anything complicated in terms of navigation. Just make sure you feel comfortable following a GPS track.

The myth: You need to run the whole way

Debunked:

Even the elite runners won’t run the entire route! While you will likely need to run or jog parts of the route in order to make the cut offs, it’s perfectly okay to hike the hills. On many sections of the route, you will probably find it’s much more efficient to hike than it is to run, especially on the rougher terrain.

As long as you can jog the flats and downhills, you should be fine!

The myth: You need a whole year to prepare for the Cape Wrath Ultra®

Debunked:

If you already have a good base level of fitness and are used to doing some longer trail runs, it’s perfectly doable to train for the Cape Wrath Ultra® in a few months. Plus, if you’re not sure if you’re ready for the full 400km, there is also the shorter Explorer option.

Just make sure your training period is focused and you get in plenty of long runs on off-road terrain. If you set aside some weekends dedicated to back-to-back long runs, you can prepare in a few months. Just make sure you don’t skimp out on the taper!

The myth: The Cape Wrath Ultra® is only for elite runners

Debunked:

You certainly don’t need to be an elite runner to complete the Cape Wrath Ultra®! Most participants are just ‘ordinary’ runners who have chosen to do something extraordinary. Many participants are people who would be in the mid or back of the pack in other trail races.

With the right training, anyone can do the Cape Wrath Ultra®. You just need the right mindset – you are capable of more than you think!
